The Office for Climate Education and the Académie de Nice establish a partnership to promote climate change education.
Mitigating the effects of climate change and adapting to inevitable disruptions require collective action on a large scale, with education playing a key role. Teachers need support to help younger generations grasp the challenges of climate change, understand its mechanisms, and envision a positive future in a transforming world.
As part of its mission to support the implementation of climate change education, the Office for Climate Education (OCE) is delighted to welcome the Académie de Nice as one of its partners. This three-year partnership aligns with the Ministry of National Education, Youth, and Sports' mission to strengthen Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). It aims to implement educational initiatives for students and provide support to teaching staff in the areas of sustainable development, with a specific focus on climate change.
“We are delighted with this partnership with the Académie de Nice and are thrilled to support teachers in this region in training young generations on climate change and raising awareness of the power of collective action.”
David Wilgenbus, OCE's Executive Director.
This partnership agreement aims to facilitate education on the preservation of natural heritage, awareness of the impact of human actions on climate change, and biodiversity conservation. The resources provided by the OCE on these topics will be distributed to teachers, and multiple training sessions will be conducted both in-person and online. The first training session, focusing on the Ocean and Climate theme, was held in-person for 40 teachers in Nice on March 2, 2023.
Teachers in the Académie de Nice are particularly interested in the "ocean-climate interactions" theme, which is integrated into curricula from middle school to high school. The resources provided by the OCE have been highly appreciated and are easily applicable in the implementation of interdisciplinary projects to engage students.
