AFD workshop on climate change education

On January 18, the Office for Climate Education (OCE) will organize a workshop dedicated to climate change education (CCE) for members of the French Development Agency (AFD). The training aims to share OCE’s in-depth expertise on CCE challenges by providing an understanding of climate issues and the different approaches deployed within education systems. A key aspect of the workshop is to demonstrate how the work of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is used to develop educational tools for teachers and their students.

David Wilgenbus, Executive Director of OCE, will introduce the workshop by highlighting the challenges posed by CCE for teachers and education systems, while addressing the evolution of public policies in this area and methods of OCE teaching based on the investigation approach and active pedagogy. Participants will also be familiar with new approaches to CCE including eco-anxiety, teaching manuals and critical thinking.

Participants will have the opportunity to discover the actions of the OCE and its partners in different geographical areas, in particular the progress of the ALEC (Latin America for climate education) pilot project in Latin America and the prospects for a new project in Africa. Nicolas Vogt, OCE scientific mediator, will also present the guide books “Climate Change and Emerged Lands” and “Ocean and Cryosphere”, illustrating the OCE educational approach through class activities.
