OCE x Canopé interviews: How do we address the challenges of climate change education?

At a time when concerns about climate change can spark alarmist or even fatalistic discourse, education remains a fundamental lever for building new narratives - ones in which students become protagonists of hopeful and constructive responses to tomorrow's challenges.

In this series of interviews produced by CanoTech, Eric Guilyardi, climate scientist and President of the Office for Climate Education (OCE), and Simon Klein, science officer at OCE, share their vision for meaningful climate education. Together, they introduce key notions to help students develop a global, resilient, and optimistic understanding of climate issues.

Among the topics addressed, Simon Klein discusses notions such as “climate justice” and “eco-anxiety”, highlighting the need for an interdisciplinary approach to climate education, integrating scientific, social and emotional insights. He explains why such approaches are essential to help teachers and students better grasp the complexity of climate change.

“Climate change represents a risk but also an opportunity to rethink tomorrow's world.”

– Eric Guilyardi, president of the OCE.

Oceanographer and climate scientist Eric Guilyardi invites us to see challenges as an opportunity to collectively envision possible futures, by questioning our lifestyles and reinventing our relationship with the world. An approach supported by climate change education rooted in action, imagination and civic engagement.
